Out on my skateboard, the night is just hummin’

March 30, 2007

When living in Boston about 10 years ago, knocking on doors for an enviro group, a friend of mine turned me on to this song, and said it should be every canvasser’s theme.

I’m inclined to agree with him, at least on the chorus. The good news is, I’m hoping that old friend will moving to my city, and we can play music together again. That would be rad.

When we used to play it was funny because he’s a great guitar player, and I’m, well, a nimrod. But, in the intervening ten years, I’ve learned to play some. So it would be fun.

I realized today I sort of miss the 90’s. Things seemed more hopeful then. Of course, we have been at war for a while. I don’t know - people say Steve Malkmus is a dick, but he’s one of the 2-3 nicest musicians I’ve ever met (the other two being Doug Bartsch and Ben Gibbard)

God speed and have a good weekend.

If we sleep together would you be my friend forever?

I know. I know! It’s been a while. And I’m sorry, I really am. It’ll be different now, baby, I promise. I’ll change.

It’s been a month of craziness. A couple weeks watching my niece, motherboard blowing up on the ole laptop, turning 32, and finally getting a fucking ipod. Which is amazing. Go get one. Actually, who am I kidding, you’ve already got one.

I did my first ‘live’ comic strip - lots of doodling before, but first real strip. It was a birthday present for my 27 year old sister, and I’m wicked proud of it. Except, as you’ll see when I post it, it looks like I’m masturbating in one scene. Which is awkward.

Right now I’m having a white russian with chocolate milk. Ooooohhhhh, I’m sooooo nasty.

Staying at my brother’s house is strange, because I watch TV, which I don’t really do here - strange that The Violent Femmes are advertising for Wendy’s. Perhaps stranger still, a Mirah song (remix of ‘la familia’ from Joyride: Remixes) was used in the opening to this week’s Grey’s Anatomy. Stranger still, I’ve seen every episode.

But, there is much good music out there still.

Nick Harcourt, who hosts ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ on KCRW used to be the DJ at the Woodstock NY station when I was going to college in the early ’90’s. I have him to thank for turning me on to Soul Coughing, which in turn helped ween me off of the Grateful Dead and onto Pavement, Sebadoh, etc. But, he looks so different than I ever expected.

Today I won another copy of Mirah’s ‘You think it’s like this, but really it’s like this’ on eBay. Got it pretty cheap too, but now I feel guilty about owning two copies of this excellent, and rare (1000 hand silkscreened copies) LP.

Here’s why Built to Spill is the best band on earth. “So kids if you want more sugar, more more cheddar, more fun…..”

And here’s why Jenny Lewis should be my wife. She sings, ‘Got a good buzz, feelin’ all right’ to a bunch of kids.

don’t forget to be kind to me.

As both regular readers of Dirt’s Funnies know, Dirt’s a huge fan of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. AND CFTPA is heading out on a massive spring tour….which sadly missed Denver. Nonetheless, if you live in these cities, and are home on those dates, go to that show. You owe it to yourself, your parents, and to Dirt.

Click the poster o vote for dirt and please leave a nice comment too. If you vote for me, I’ll give you$1000. OK well, that’s a lie, but please do vote for me.

i don’t know what to say, i can’t say what to do, but we’re not going back there again

OK - Dirt here, french-press-coffee-making-live-blogging……is that old yet? ho hum

First thing - thank you to the lovely people at Third Story Records. Again, revitalizing my faith in DYI mail-order indie rock fun. I just received my copies of the Mirah/Emilyn Brodsky split 7″ - copies because they put it out in black and ‘limited-edition’ blue. David, the king of Third Story threw in a CD of another release, this by Guignol, which is sort of like the soundtrack to Amelie, if performed by Polish mountain men folk singers. But you should order that 7″. I should add that Third Story was going to release a bunch of Matt and Kim stuff, but then M/K got too big, so Third Story backed off. I thought that was really sweet. And M/K are great.

Had a dream last night that I was at a Sonic Youth/Fugazi/Kinks show that pretty much nobody else came to, though I do not know why. I know we left (me and my roomates) because we had to go to some reunion. When we got back, the Kinks were finishing ‘Apeman’ and Ray Davies gave us the dirtiest look and mouthed, ‘WHERE THE FUCK ‘AVE YOU BEEN, WANKERS?’. He was pissed. So we went to the side of the stage, and Joe Lally (fugazi) was there. My roomate said he looked really young, and that he could probably take him, to which Joe Lally said, ‘I’ll kick your ass’. It was pretty neat. Also, the members of Sonic Youth looked nothing like the actual members of Sonic Youth, but it was them - they played Death Valley ‘69.

Hoping to wrie out interview questions for JD Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut today - will keep you posted, but should be neat-o.

dirt and doug martsch, kicking it.

March 2, 2007

Doug Martsch is a great guy. When he played in Boulder last year with Built to Spill, both shows sold out, so he came out in front of the Fox and played 5-song acoustic sets each night for people who couldn’t get in. Was very sweet of him. And Dirt was there.

Thanks to whomever put this up - but the sound is sort of jacked.
